Whitewell

Whitewell, Forest of Bowland, Lancashire.

Whitewell is a village within the civil parish of the Bowland Forest Low and Ribble Valley borough of Lancashire, England.

River Hodder

It is in the Forest of Bowland an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Historically, the village was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but was transferred to Lancashire on 1 April 1974. The village stands on a bend in the River Hodder.

St Michael’s Chapel

The village comprises an Upper and Lower Whitewell. Lower Whitewell is the site of St Michael’s Chapel, built in the late medieval period, certainly no later than 1400, which comes under the Lancashire parish of Whalley. The restaurant and hotel, The Inn at Whitewell, is also situated in Lower Whitewell.

The Inn at Whitewell is an old fashioned rural Inn, welcoming to all, providing 23 bedrooms and serving fantastic local ingredients, the perfect spot to take a break during your walk.

These stepping stones across the River Hodder are close to the Inn at Whitewell. After heavy rain fall when the river subsides drift wood and broken tree branches get caught on the stones as shown in the photograph above.

Whitewell Social Hall

The Whitewell Social Hall is opposite to the Inn at Whitewell on a raised area and on a road off the main road through Whitewell.
