Knowlmere Manor Bridge

Knowlmere Manor has two private access roads one of which crosses over the river Hodder, this bridge is called Knowlmere Manor Bridge. It is located between the villages of Dunsop Bridge and Newton in Bowland in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire.

The original bridge was built in 1873 and the new spans, 3.7 metrs wide and both 13 metres in length, were commissioned in 1903 by the owner of the estate William Peel. The designer of the new concrete span was Louis Gustave Mouchel.

Mouchel, after whom one of the worlds biggest civil engineering firms is named, was one of the first engineers to adopt the, then new, technique of reinforcing concrete with iron called ferro-concrete.

The new spans of Knowlmere Manor Bridge were one of the first examples of this in the country. The first being at Chewton Glen in Hampshire which was built in 1902.

The two photographs above show you approaching the bridge from Knowlmere Manor, showing just how narrow the road is across the bridge. If you continue on this road northwards you will reach the main road between Dunsop Bridge and Newton in Bowland.

The two photographs above show you approaching the bridge from the north side, coming down from the main Dunsop Bridge and Newton in Bowland road.

The photograph above was taken from the bridge, looking northwards towards Newton in Bowland.

The photograph above shows the River Hodder winding down southwards towards Dunsop Bridge.
