Approaching Newton in Bowland from the South having just crossed Newton Bridge. Newton or Newton-in-Bowland is a village and civil parish in the Forest of Bowland, in the county of Lancashire, England, formerly known as Newton-on-Hodder. |
Newton Hall Straight ahead is Newton Hall, a house in limestone with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has two storeys with an attic, and a symmetrical front of four bays. The windows are sashes with architraves. The central doorway has an architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded pediment on console brackets. ![]() Flanking the house are short walls with semicircular-headed gateways. To the left, and set back, is a wing with mullioned windows, and at the rear of the house is a canted bay window. |
The Parkers Arms The Parkers Arms is a Grade II Listed Building, and takes its name from the neighbouring Parker family of Browsholme Hall. For many generations, the Parkers have served the Lords of Bowland as Bowbearers of the Forest of Bowland. The Parkers Arms is popular with tourists and locals alike. It serves modern British food and local ales and is renowned for sourcing much of its food from within the Bowland area. |

Newton Chapel Newton-in-Bowland Congregational Chapel was founded in 1696 by Richard Lee of Birkett, and his initials were over the door of the original building. The chapel was re-built in 1878, and as of July 2015 it became up for sale and has been sold, presumably to be converted into a house. |
Newton Old School Newton in Bowland National Old School was erected in 1842 AD, and is a Grade II Listed building. The former school is in sandstone with a slate roof, and it has one storey and four bays… To see more images and information on Newton in Bowland Old School CLICK HERE. |
Salisbury Hall Salisbury Hall is a early 18th century Grade II Listed pebbledashed house with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has two storeys with an attic, and four bays. The ground floor contains three-light mullioned windows, and in the upper floor there are cross windows. The main doorway has a chamfered surround and a battlemented lintel, and to the left is a doorway with a plain surround.

The Old Reading Room The Old Reading Room is a late 18th century Grade II Listed building and former library, was altered in 1830, and the top storey was removed in the 1960s. It is in limestone with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, and has two storeys. On the front is a central doorway with a plain surround, to the left is a wide entrance with a segmental head and voussoirs, and to the right is a mullioned window. In the upper floor is a six-light weaving window. The rear is partly built into a hillside, with a central doorway that has a semicircular head with a keystone, imposts, and an inscribed tympanum. |
